Chelsea still a team in transition, says Conte

The striker has scored six goals since joining from Napoli for £14.6m in January and has just returned to fitness after injury.

"We passed a big step, a big psychological step, after the defeat against United", Conte said. There are winners in this team and we have to keep it up.

"After three years you can see how the team is improving every year and all our decisions so far are good". It was the case again this time.

"We worked together with the national team", Conte said at a press conference.

"The most important thing is you can win and lose in football [but you must do it] with your identity, and it was the case here, so that makes me proud".

Chelsea last did the league and FA Cup double in 2010 as Carlo Ancelotti enjoyed a similarly impressive first season in the hot seat, although Conte highlighted the different circumstances his compatriot faced. "And for us it's great", he told reporters.

Lloris believes Chelsea's superior experience may have made the difference on Saturday.

Two-goal Wembley hero Willian, who played 61 minutes of the Spurs game, could find himself on the bench against Southampton to accommodate the retention of Pedro and Hazard's inclusion while Costa should start ahead of Michy Batshuayi, who also featured for the first hour at Wembley.

The Italian added: "This season is very important because we are trying to build something important for the present, to put the foundations down and be strong, stronger for the future". Then Chelsea were very clinical. In fact, the Blues have won three of their last eight at home against the Saints and most recently lost the same match a year ago 3-1. We have to get this out of our heads and carry on -- I'm sure we will.

"It was a crucial moment because it was just before half time and in your mind, especially in Chelsea's minds, they got an advantage".

Tottenham, though, face a tough challenge tomorrow when they travel to Crystal Palace, who in recent weeks have seen off Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

"Now it's a good season". "Our answer was very good and for this reason I must be pleased".

Diego Costa ended a seven-game goal drought in style to help Chelsea open up a seven-point lead in the Premier League with a 4-2 victory over Southampton on Tuesday.
