Monte Carlo Masters wrap: Nadal destroys Zverev as Murray, Wawrinka crash out

Monte Carlo was Murray's first tournament since recovering from an elbow injury and with the French Open fast approaching, more competitive action on the clay would have undoubtedly been invaluable.

Ninth-seeded Tomas Berdych, the runner-up here in 2015, rallied to beat 39-year-old German Tommy Haas 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The world No. 1 was joined in the third round by nine-time tournament champion Rafael Nadal, who held off British surprise-package Kyle Edmund 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 in the Spaniard's 400th career match on clay.

World number one Andy Murray will play next week's Barcelona Open in a bid to build match fitness and clock up much-needed claycourt time ahead of next month's French Open.

"He started playing better toward the end of the set".

Twelve-time grand slam champion Djokovic showed he still has work to do in order to return to the peak of his powers, but saw off Pablo Carreno Busta 6-2 4-6 6-4.

The Scot won the opening set at the Monte Carlo Country Club in 48 minutes but his service was suspect and Ramos, ranked 24th in the world and the 15th seed, ripped through the second to go into the third with all to play for.

Murray was joined in the third round by Swiss third seed Stan Wawrinka, who survived a second-set blip to defeat Czech Jiri Vesely 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. "For sure, I'm disappointed because I wanted to play better and make a better result here". "I was a little bit slow today-heavy legs".

While Vesely, who beat world No. 2 Novak Djokovic in the second round a year ago, held on for the set, it was one-way traffic for Wawrinka in the decider.

But instead of accepting his fate, Ramos-Vinola clawed his way back into the tie and took it on his second match point.

The Serb saved two break points at 4-4 in the final set before immediately breaking Carreno Busta to set up a quarter-final with Belgium's David Goffin. But the Spaniard roared back into the match to take the second and played some sparkling tennis for much of the decider.

He sent a backhand wide on his first match point and then clinched victory when Murray's backhand hit the net.

The Spanish great broke five times as he won at a canter and will now face Diego Schwartzman, who reaches his first Masters quarter-final with a 6-3 6-0 demolition of Jan-Lennard Struff.
