Prosecutors allege that she funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars from a charity group - One Door for Education Foundation - into her own account.
The jury mulling the fate of former Rep. Corrine Brown has gone home for the night, after almost 12 hours of deliberation.
While Brown represented parts of greater Orlando during her time in the house, she was rarely seen in the area, spending most of her time in the Jacksonville area of her snake-like district.
Corrine Brown was found guilty of 18 separate counts on Thursday in a corruption trial that saw her facing 22 charges relating to the alleged use of charity funds as a personal slush fund.
According to WJXT-TV, Brown used at least $300,000 to pay for lavish receptions, box seats at sporting events and concerts, and trips for her and her aides.
Jurors were told the brash 70-year-old Democratic icon, who spent 24 years in Congress before losing reelection last year, received $141,000 in untraceable cash over several years through sources including the sham charity One Door for Education and her Friends of Corrine Brown campaign committee. She has pleaded not guilty, blaming her former chief of staff Elias "Ronnie" Simmons for stealing.
"She has gotten stuff done and stands up for what she believes in", said Duncan. She lost re-election after she was indicted last summer. She was convicted of 18 fraud and tax evasion charges.
Mr. Simmons said Ms.
Brown's attorney, James Smith, told reporters outside the Jacksonville courtroom that Brown would ask for a new trial, though Smith declined to say on what grounds.
"Corrupt public officials undermine the integrity of our government and violate the public's trust, and that is why investigating public corruption remains the FBI's top criminal priority", Spencer said.
Brown is usually ready to speak her mind, but as she left the court this afternoon, she had little to say.
"She was calling on her own behalf, but thought that other jurors were concerned as well", said Judge Corrigan. "And she will continue to do that".
Brown's sentencing date has yet to be set, WTLV-TV reported.
As for Representative Brown herself, sources indicate that the congresswoman, who served the Duval County community since her election in 1993, had no comment as she was escorted out of the courthouse to her waiting vehicle.
