Fidget Spinner won't ruin your child's health or education

One Salisbury school embraces the fidget spinner while a few schools are banning the toy

Curiously, while spinners were originally introduced as an aid to prevent distraction, teachers are now up in arms about kids with no previous attention problems being distracted by the gizmos. The spinning gadgets are being lauded as great stress relievers, and some have even touted them as calming children with ADHD, autism and behaviour disorders. He just needed something tactile to focus that energy.

A spokesman for Perth and Kinross Council said: "As far as we are aware there are now no such bans on these toys in schools in Perth and Kinross".

Toys R Us says of the spinner: "Not only is it fun and interesting, it can also help you to focus on daily tasks and relieve anxiety, simply hold the spinner in your hand and spin it rapidly with your finger". "I find the most requested are the LED and glow-in-the dark models", said the 30-year-old.

Teachers however are less impressed with the craze, with some schools banning the spinners claiming they distract students from their work.

Q. When a person is fidgeting, what's going on in their brain? Many teachers say it can also be a major distraction in the classroom.

In 2010, some Wichita schools banished Silly Bandz - silicone bracelets students collected by the dozens - because some kids flicked them, argued over them or played with them too much. Another study, published in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, found that the more kids with ADHD fidgeted, the better their working memory. How did you discover that? The kids may be sitting at a desk, bouncing a leg repeatedly, or they may be squirming about at the dinner table, tormenting the cutlery.

So for the kids with ADHD where there's this hyper-movement, it helped them.

Ashleigh Heard, 28, a sales assistant from Douglas, said her son Aiden Provan, nine, was a fan of the toys.

Despite such support, outright bans on fidgets concern experts such as Claire Heffron. "They just appeared really fast", she says.

Fidgeting is not something that parents and teachers should be so concerned about, unless it affects other people in the classroom.

They come in plastic and metal models. It is, in some way, a compensatory process that's happening. It's especially popular because many people like to fidget and this gives their hands something to do, hence the name.

"Teachers should explain that fidgets are a learning tool, not a toy, so students understand the goal they're serving,"the AJC reported, based on guidelines suggested by experts".
