MS shooting rampage leaves eight dead

A portrait of slain Lincoln County Sheriff's Office deputy William Durr peers out of the tributes left on his car at the Lincoln County Brookhaven Government Complex in Brookhaven Miss. Tuesday

A man who got into an argument with his estranged wife and her family over his children was arrested Sunday in a house-to-house shooting rampage in rural MS that left eight people dead, including his mother-in-law and a sheriff's deputy.

Police say they won't comment on Godbolt's mental state, but in a video shot by Therese Apel of The Clarion-Ledger, a Jackson-based newspaper, he seems composed for a man accused of committing eight murders in the seven hours prior. Authorities said Godbolt fled and killed four more people at two other homes.

Godbolt was taken into custody and remained hospitalized for a gunshot wound, Strain said Monday.

Authorities plan to charge him with one count of capital murder in Durr's death and seven counts on first-degree murder in the others.

Authorities on Monday said Godbolt was related to or acquainted with all the victims except Durr.

Mitchell, who was able to escape the first home with Godbolt's wife, said he was "devastated" about what happened.

"We was talking about me trying to take the children home. somebody called the officer. that's what they do, they intervene". People that didn't even live at the house. That's what they do.

"He came to get his kids for the night and they acted like they didn't want to go and a deputy was called out", he said.

Godbolt's wife and their two children had been staying with Mitchell for a few weeks, he said, until Godbolt showed up just before midnight on Saturday to demand she hand over the kids.

The second crime scene is the home of Godbolt's pastor, and the Burages - who were found dead at the third location - were the sister and brother-in-law of Godbolt's wife, relatives told the station.

Those killed at the first scene at 3871 Lee Road in Bogue Chitto were Goldbolt's mother-in-law, Barbara Mitchell, 55; her daughter, Toccarra May, 35; Mitchell's sister, Brenda May, 53, and Durr, 36, who was responding to a domestic call around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to law enforcement, Willie Corey Godbolt opened fire at Mitchell's residence after a sheriff's deputy showed up to resolve a conflict Godbolt had with his estranged wife.

Durr, the slain deputy, had served two years in the sheriff's office and previously worked as a Brookhaven police officer.

Godbolt said he hadn't planned to be captured alive.

"I honestly believe he came to kill everybody in the house", Vincent Mitchell, the stepfather of the suspect's wife, told NBC affiliate WLBT. Suicide by cop was my intention.

Durr was married and had an 11-year-old son.

18-year-old Jordan Blackwell was one of the juvenile's killed.

"He had a heart of gold", Rushing told The Daily Leader. "He would go out of his way to help anybody". "I thank the law enforcement agencies involved for their hard work", he said.

"Every day, the men and women who wear the badge make some measure of sacrifice to protect and serve their communities", Bryant said. "May the peace of the Almighty wash over those hurting after this senseless tragedy". Officials did not say how Godbolt was injured.

"He had a very bad temper", he said.
