Afghans mourn a day after massive truck bombing kills 90

Men and women struggled to get through security checkpoints to search for loved ones.

Ismail Kawasi says it was not immediately known what the target of the attack was on Wednesday morning.

"The indications are that (Wednesday's attack) was carried out by terrorists outside Afghanistan". Over a third of the country is outside government control.

There was no claim of responsibility for the bombing, which came in the first week of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told NPR that "his outfit has nothing to do with this blast and that they have not carried out the attack", Abdul Sattar reports for NPR. There has been no comment from so-called Islamic State (IS), which has a small presence in eastern Afghanistan and has been quick to claim attacks in recent months.

The incident in the diplomatic area of Kabul took place around 8:30 am local time after a vehicle packed with explosives was detonated.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said an Afghan security guard was among those killed and that a number of employees were wounded.

Kabul on Thursday mourned victims of a powerful truck bomb that killed at least 80 people and wounded hundreds amid growing public anger at the government's failure to prevent yet another deadly attack in the heart of the Afghan capital.

The bombing happened in an area not far from the German embassy. "There are several other important compounds and offices near there too", he added.

Pakistani diplomats and embassy staffers were injured in the heavy blast. At least two journalists - one each from the BBC and 1TV - were wounded. All staff was safe, he said, though the blast left "considerable damage", including shattered windows.

The Chinese, Turkish and Iranian embassies are also located there.

Besides damaging the German embassy, the bomb, which exploded close to its entrance, also damaged the embassy buildings of China, Turkey, India, and France, the respective foreign ministries reported.

That same day, nine police officers were injured in a violent protest enforcing the deportation of an Afghan student in the southeastern city of Nuremberg.

He condemned what he called an attack on "those who are in Afghanistan working with the people there for a better future".

"By killing innocent and destitute people, the enemies of Afghanistan's peace and stability showed that they are not worthy of friendship and will not change their stance against Afghans", ACB said in a statement late Wednesday.

"Let's be clear: This is an intelligence failure, as has been the case with so many other attacks in Kabul and beyond". It was one of the worst extremist attacks since the drawdown of foreign forces from Afghanistan in 2014.

They were ousted from power in a US-led invasion in 2001, but have seen a resurgence since the withdrawal of frontline North Atlantic Treaty Organisation combat troops in 2014, briefly capturing key cities in addition to vast swathes of countryside. They mainly serve in an advisory capacity - a far cry from the United States presence of more than 100,000 six years ago.
