Apple Watch adds gym equipment integration, built-in Bluetooth

Apple took the wraps off watchOS 4 today during its WWDC Keynote, with VP of Technology Kevin Lynch demonstrating several new features in the next major update to Apple's wearable device. watchOS 4 will add several new Watch Faces, most notably a proactive "Siri Face" that will provide a display of relevant information throughout the day, similar to the "Proactive Assistant" introduced in iOS 9 two years ago.

The Activity app is also getting an overhaul with watchOS 4. This makes no sense to team INQ, but Apple tells us it's added high-intensity interval training and that new workouts can be added during a current workout with a press of the new "plus" button. Apple has also teamed up with Disney once again to bring watch faces of Woody, Jesse and Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story franchise to the Apple Watch.

Here we round up all the latest news and rumors about watchOS 4 and break down its key features.

In addition to these features, watchOS 4 comes with support for the new person-to-person Apple Pay feature.

Apple Music is also an important focus. A preview will be available for developers immediately.

Apple Watch will also be able to communicate seamlessly with as much as 80% of all NFC-enabled gym equipment, according to Apple, such as commercial machinery from leading manufacturers like Cybex, Schwinn, and Life Fitness. The OS should be generally available to the public around September 2017.

The update, which will be called watchOS 4, will be launching broadly this fall. A crown at the top left corner of the screen also allows users to scroll through a list of timely news and content. Apple Watch, additionally, will tap into your workout history and suggest milestones accordingly. These are workouts built around periods of intense activity followed by recovery periods and are seen as a more effective workout over a shorter period of time compared to steady-state exercise, such as jogging. Reports have claimed that Apple is working on its own sleep tracking software suite, which seems to be corroborated by its recent acquisition of sleep tracking firm Beddit in May. Here are the most important new features.
