Arnold Palmer's 1960 US Open win honored at Erin

The American posted a nine-under-par round of 63 in Wisconsin, the lowest score in relation to par in the 122-year history of the US Open.

Despite his heroics at Erin Hills, Thomas did not actually finish the day on top of the leaderboard. Everyone near the top had it going.

Brian Harman leads at 12 under.

Harman, bidding to become the first left-hander to win a U.S. Open, is a victor on the PGA Tour this year while Thomas is the world number 13, a three-time victor this season and a member of the exclusive "59" club after breaking 60 at the Sony Open this year.

No player within eight shots of the lead has ever won a major before, meaning only something really, really dramatic will prevent the U.S. Open from crowning a first-time major champion today.

Since shooting a sublime 65 on day one to lead the tournament, Fowler's progress has been less spectacular, but he remains firmly in contention at 10 under par. Smiles are rare at a U.S. Open when a player finishes before the leaders tee off. They each hit their first shot into the rough.

The thrilling finish vaulted Thomas into the clubhouse lead on 11 under late in the third round but American Ben Harman shot a 5-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead going into last round.

Reed was one of the biggest movers, powering up the board with a dazzling seven-under-par 65 that included four birdies on the front nine against one bogey.

There were early clues that the wind could level the playing field in some of the first groups to tee off on Sunday. Going into the final round, 42 players were still under par.

In the previous 116 U.S. Opens, only six players had ever reached 10-under par or lower, never in the same tournament. Fleetwood was poised to take the lead until his pitch to the 18th wasn't strong enough and his next shot went beyond the flag and down the slope some 70 feet away.

Whoever emerged victorious would definitely have earned it given the conditions which were reminiscent of the final round of the 1992 US Open at Pebble Beach. The final-round average was 77.2, and 20 players shot in the 80s.

"Even though it will be hard, I don't anticipate this being a bloodletting". He enters the final round in a three-way tie for second place at 11-under par, along with Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka.

Harman, who missed the cut both times on his only other US Open appearances in 2012 and 2015, held his nerve to fire six birdies and only one bogey on a day of record-breaking low scoring at Erin Hills Golf Course.

Birdies will be harder to come by on Sunday with winds gusting from 25-30 miles per hour (40-48 kph), bending flag sticks and moving balls over hardening greens.

Early players have been struggling as the winds have made virtually every shot more treacherous.
