Brazil's president says corruption charge is 'fiction'

Brazil's President Michel Temer waved after attending a ceremony at the Planalto Presidential Palace in Brasilia Monday

He said it could be further compromised if there were more revelations, or any sign that Brazil's economy, which has been showing some faint signs of recovery, is stumbling again.

Some believed her removal was politically motivated.

Brazil's president dismissed corruption allegations against him as a "soap opera plot" Tuesday and sought to cast doubt on the motivations of the country's top prosecutor a day after a scathing indictment was issued against the leader.

"The president is moving to the phase of total war to save his mandate", the newspaper's columnist Bernardo Mello Franco wrote.

He is expected to file the obstruction of justice and criminal membership charges at a later date, ensuring a sustained legal salvo against the embattled president whose approval ratings are at seven percent.

The presidency did not immediately comment on the prosecutor's charge but earlier on Monday a defiant Mr Temer told a gathering of business leaders: "Nothing will destroy us, neither me, nor our ministers". If it does, Temer could be suspended from office while the case is tried.

The charges need to be approved by two-thirds of Brazil's chamber of deputies to proceed.

"I know what I did", Temer said following the release of the tapes.

Temer, in his turn, said he gave a positive assessment to construction of the Glonass stations on Brazilian soil, and expressed interest in expanding the network of such stations.

Michel Temer, who served as Vice President of Brazil under former President Dilma Roussef in 2011-2016, took office as President of Latin America's largest country on August 31, 2016.

Brazil faces one of the worst and longest recessions in recent history.

Yet the political capital he needs for those reforms, including the hugely unpopular proposal to cut back generous pensions and to free up labor laws, is rapidly slipping away.

Brazil's President Michel Temer waves as he exits after attending a ceremony at the Planalto Presidential Palace, in Brasilia, Monday, June 26, 2017.

Currently, the lower house of Congress is lukewarm about bringing him down. Also, there is no agreement on a corruption-free consensus candidate who could fill Temer's shoes until scheduled elections in October 2018 if he were removed.

President of Brazil Michel Temer speaks to the media at the Main Press Centre on Day 13 of the Rio 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 18, 2016.

Even stalwart allies have begun to bail on Temer.

A third of Temer's cabinet and dozens of members of congress are being investigated for corruption.

Executives said in plea-bargain testimony the president took bribes for resolving tax matters, freeing up loans from state-run banks and other matters. Lula is being prosecuted in five separate criminal cases, on charges ranging from corruption to influence-trafficking.
