British Police Name Third Attacker From Saturday's Rampage In London

The attack, the third in Britain in three months involving suspects who had been on the radar of British authorities, has raised questions over the government's ability to protect Britain following cuts to police numbers in recent years.

The Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported Tuesday that Youssef Zaghba had been stopped in Italy while trying to go to Syria in 2016.

A number of local police and councils have confirmed security is being reviewed ahead of the election.

The authorities have said Butt was known to police and the domestic security service MI5 but there was no intelligence that an attack was being planned. Butt told the friend he had stopped attending al- Muhajiroun meetings some time ago. "What happened?" he told Sky News. The issue has become a key one in the run-up to Thursday's general election.

Police on Tuesday named the third attacker in the weekend terror assault in London amid mounting anger, two days before an election, over how the jihadist killers had apparently escaped surveillance.

The ex-partner of the third attacker Rachid Redouane, 30, revealed she has "shed many tears for the people caught up in this horrific incident".

The attack, and prior attacks in Manchester and near Parliament in London, have prompted Prime Minister Theresa May to call for tougher counterterrorism laws even if it means changing human rights protections.

Between 2009 and 2016, the number of police officers fell by nearly 20,000, or around 14 percent, according to the independent Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank.

Kirsty Boden, an Australian nurse working in London, was named as one of the victims.

In a separate appearance on ITV, Khan insisted he did not want to engage in a war of words with Trump.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson acknowledged that the security services had to provide an answer.

Corbyn said the Conservatives have slashed 20,000 police jobs over the past seven years in power.

The other two were named on June 5 as Pakistani-born British citizen Khuram Shazad Butt, 27, and Rachid Redouane, 30, from Barking, had claimed to be Moroccan and Libyan.

Counterterror analysts say they are surprised that Butt remained a "low priority" for the security services despite his close connections to Sajeel Shahid, a 41-year-old who ran an all-Muslin gym in east London and was named in a NY court case as having helped to set up weapons training in Pakistan for the July 7 suicide bombers.

In fact, Butt was one of the main characters in a television documentary called "The Jihadis Next Door".

The Islamic gym where Butt worked out said Tuesday they had seen nothing of concern during his time there.

British police and MI5 set up in 2013 an early warning system, known as Project Danube, to help them spot when low-priority suspects might be re-engaging in violent extremism. Investigations involving known plots, authorities say, take up the bulk of the security services' resources.

The self-styled "Islamic State" (IS) militant group claimed responsibility for the attack on Sunday.

Eight people were killed and dozens injured when three men launched a van and knife rampage on Saturday night.

In a statement Wednesday, relatives of Khuram Butt - one of three men to take part in the deadly massacre last Saturday - condemned the attack and called on local authorities in the United Kingdom to put a stop to others like him, who may be planning more strikes.
