Congress Not To Attend Special Midnight Meeting On GST Implementation

4 Days Before Midnight GST Launch Opposition Parties Consider No-Show

New Delhi, Jun 29 It is "unfortunate" that the congress party chose to boycott tomorrow's midnight GST session, Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu today said, claiming "sooner or later it will repent" for its decision to do so.

Stage is set for the launch of a nationwide goods and services tax at midnight Friday amid protests from opposition parties who see hardships to small businesses in pushing through the biggest economic reform without preparations.

"The Left will not be participating in the midnight GST meeting". He assured us he would raise the issues of Gujarat's industry and trade in Parliament and with the authorities concerned. "We will not be part of it", he said.

The Opposition, which is now considering to boycott the GST launch programme even after the country's biggest tax reform saw an all-party consensus, will only send across a signal that it is deliberately trying to deny PM Modi the credit for making things possible despite the odds.

Millions of small businesses, outside the tax net earlier, still have to join the network, and an umbrella organization pleaded for them to be given more time. Both Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar or senior leader Sharad Yadav will not attend the event.

"It is unfortunate that Congress party and some allies have chose to boycott the meeting".

CPI General Secretary S Sudhakar Reddy said the party had taken this decision after discussions with its MPs.

Yechury has been critical of the "hurried manner" in which the government is launching the GST.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has given businesses two months leeway to file late returns during the switch to GST.A massive media campaign has been launched by the government to create awareness, with telephone help lines opened to address public concerns.
