Former Ravens pass rusher Elvis Dumervil signs with 49ers

21 December 2014 Ravens OLB Elvis Dumervil during 25- 13 loss to the Texans at NRG Stadium in Houston TX

Dumervil is a former teammate of the 49ers' new general manager.

The news of the Dumervil signing came not long after the Niners announced they have signed veteran cornerback Brandon Boykin. Dumervil played with first-year 49ers coach John Lynch on the Denver Broncos in 2006 and 2007.

Dumervil spent the previous four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, making the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2015 and the All-Pro first team in 2014 when he tied a career high with 17 sacks.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the contract was for two years, citing an undisclosed source. Dumervil was released by the Ravens on March 8th.

Look for this to happen, as San Francisco strives to upgrade what has been an anemic pass rush in recent years.

The 49ers have been rebuilding their pass rush through the draft. The 2009 achievement led the league. The 49ers has the NFL's worst scoring defense last season and has a slew of front-seven players - including Aaron Lynch, Arik Armstead, Tank Carradine and Eli Harold - who need to improve.

He's 33 and coming off a 2016 season mostly lost to a foot injury.

With his hybrid experience, Dumervil is the flawless candidate to be San Francisco's "LEO" pass rusher as it makes a transition to a Seattle-like 4-3 under defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

One has to wonder if Lynch's connection with Denver made the Niners a bit more attractive to Dumervil. Dumervil also confirmed in a tweet that he had signed with San Francisco.
