Formula 1 veteran Robert Kubica tests F1 vehicle with Renault in Spain

Robert Kubica completes 115 laps in private Renault F1 test

"I have mixed feelings".

Robert Kubica will test an F1 auto for the very first time since a rally accident halted the talented Pole's career in Grand Prix racing in February of 2011.

"I would like to thank everybody for making this possible, I hope it was a good day for everyone and maybe they saw something of my old, 2010 self", Kubica said after the test. It was a very important day for me from an emotional point of view. I don't know what the future will bring, but I know one thing, after working for more than one year to prepare for this, I ran with good pace and consistent in hard conditions.

"I am proud with what I achieved, but also it shows what I have lost".

He won BMW Sauber's only race at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix; according to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, had Kubica driven the 2012 Lotus during the actual 2012 season, he would have won the title; and he had been slated to join Ferrari in 2013 alongside Fernando Alonso, who had dubbed him "the best of us".

Kubica's F1 career ended in the same month as his last test when he suffered severe arm, leg and hand injuries in a near-fatal crash during a minor rally in northern Italy that he had entered for fun. You can read Mark Hughes discussing the potential of the Pole's comeback here, believing this test to be 'far more than just a nice day out.' His pace is thought to have been very quick and is rumored to have been quicker than Sirotkin.

The legacy of that injury meant his arm movement was restricted and a return to F1, the pinnacle of motorsport, seemed unlikely - until now.

"It is a tricky thing to jump into an F1 auto after six years and it was a great performance from him. Renault gave me my first F1 test in 2005, so I appreciate another test this time around", he continued.

Renault revealed the test had taken place on Tuesday in a series of posts on Twitter. Robert has changed a bit, he has softened and he no longer insists as much when he has a question about the tiniest detail of the settings of his vehicle!
