GOP senators now oppose health bill _ enough to sink it

Sen. Dean Heller R-Nev

"The American people are calling out for relief, and my administration is determined to provide it".

A cynic might say that the BCRA is less a Republican health care bill than a caricature of a Republican health care bill.

In his address, Trump went on to call for congressional Democrats to muster the political courage to support the measure, "instead of obstructing, always obstructing change". The Senate bill would put care out of reach for many of us. They'd like to get certain changes. However, these four conservatives expressed their willingness to support changes with Paul explicitly stating he was "open to negotiations".

Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst is suggesting Iowans would not be losing Medicaid coverage even as the Senate GOP health care bill would phase out financing to expand the low-income insurance program. While McConnell's bill curtails the program at a slower rate than the House version, it ultimately cuts deeper, which has prompted senators whose states expanded Medicaid to raise red flags.

Two moderate senators, Lisa Murkowski, of Alaska, and Susan Collins, of ME, are the most likely to oppose the bill, which means one more could kill it outright.

"I believe that the bill that the Senate will vote on, assuming they get to that point, will have some sort of mechanism to cause participation in it", said former GOP Senate staffer Rodney Whitlock.

Caroline Pearson, a senior vice president of the consulting firm Avalare Health, said the Senate subsidies would be smaller than Obama's because they're keyed to the cost of a bare-bones plan and because additional help now provided for deductibles and copayments would eventually be discontinued.

"These policies would prove devastating to state Medicaid programs over time, very likely causing numerous most vulnerable people to lose access to care when they need it most", the center's report said.

Something I missed when tweeting about the Senate HC bill earlier: no continuous coverage / waiting period provision.

The Tea Party-aligned group FreedomWorks also said in s statement that the bill doesn't live up to promises by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., of a full repeal of the ACA.

Despite substantial differences between the House's American Healthcare Act and the Senate's Better Care Reconciliation Act, The Hill's Scott Wong reported Thursday that a member of the House GOP conference close to the leadership said the Republican brass wanted to take up and pass whatever came out of the Senate. They included letting states design coverage without needing federal waivers, allowing consumers to buy insurance across state lines, and allowing insurers that meet federal mandates to sell other plans that don't comply.

"I have multiple sclerosis, and I'm on Medicaid, and I only got Medicaid through the ACA's Medicaid expansion", said Gunter.

Alyssa Brooks-Dowty, a former foster parent who is also the mother of a young child with two pre-existing medical conditions, said she was there because she feels the reform poses an immediate threat to her family.

Trump said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer criticized the GOP bill before knowing what was in it.

"I want the bill to look more like a repeal bill", Paul told MSNBC on Friday.

"If that (Republican bill) fails, then we can go back to the drawing board and work together to fix the problems with Obamacare", McCaskill said. "Health care is a right in the industrialized world, and it's becoming a right in many countries that are not industrialized".

But Republicans only hold a 52-48 majority in the Senate, with all Democrats expected to vote against the Republican proposal.
