Ingram, Charges agree to four-year, $66 million extension

Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

The Chargers entered their final week of organized team activities under a cloud of bad news. And on Sunday, another former Gamecock star got paid.

According to National Football League insider Ian Rapoport, the Chargers and defensive end Melvin Ingram have agreed to a four-year, $66 million deal with $42 million guaranteed. "But he will eventually be here on campus".

Ingram, the Chargers' 2012 first-round pick out of SC, returned from a torn ACL at the end of the 2014 season to post 18.5 sacks in 32 games since.

Ingram's new contract is worth $66 million and includes $42 million in guarantees, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The Chargers placed their franchise tag on Ingram in March.

Ingram recorded 60 tackles, six tackles for a loss, eight sacks, four forced fumbles, and five passes defended in 2016.

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said in February that signing Ingram to a deal was at the top of the team' to-do list this summer.

Generally, deals with tagged players push up to the July 15 deadline for long-term contracts, but the Chargers were able to avoid such drama easily. Last year, the team didn't agree to a deal with the first-round pick Joey Bosa until August 29.
