Iran accuses Saudis of supporting terrorist groups

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has fingered the United States for instability in the Middle East.

Press TV reported that Tehran MP Elias Hazrati said the assailants were armed with two Kalashnikovs and a handgun.

Khamenei said the USA and its allies' engagement in the Middle East to fight terrorism is a "lie" and referred to them as "the source of instability in the Middle East".

He reportedly told high-ranking Iranian officials the the U.S. and its "agents are the source of instability in the Middle East... who created Islamic State?"

Iranian officials said Saturday they had killed the attack's mastermind.

"With respect to the current crisis over in Qatar for example, there's absolutely a legitimate concern about the country funding terrorist groups, but I think it would be unsafe to assume that this is the principle guiding our relationship with the kingdom, given Saudi Arabia's own extremely complicated-to say the least-relationship with extremism".

Also, just hours before the deadly attacks by the Islamic State (IS) in Iran's capital Tehran last Wednesday, which killed 17 people, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir claimed that Iran was the world's leading supporter of terrorism and must be punished.

The source noted that Humayqani's inclusion on the Saudi terror list is proof that Saudi Arabia, which created the coalition to support Yemen's legal government and combat terror, "won't make it easy for those proved to be involved in supporting and financing terror".

The biggest diplomatic rift in years among the rich states of the Gulf has become a major test for the United States, which is closely allied to the countries on both sides.

But the deal has not led to normalization of ties between the two countries that Rouhani hoped for.

File image of Iran's foreign minister Javad Zarif. Trump has frequently called the agreement "one of the worst deals ever signed" and said Washington would review it. "We believe that at the end of the day they will find it necessary to abide by the deal. Most of our problems with them can not be resolved". Daesh claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Iran has been a functioning nation state where the central authorities have enjoyed a monopoly of force and people out of uniform have been overwhelmingly unarmed.

Commenting on the statement at the time, Zarif called it "repugnant" and slammed a new round of USA sanctions against Iran recently approved by Senate.
