Lalu Prasad Yadav's wife, son and daughter charged under Benami Act

Lalu Prasad Yadav's daughter Misa Bharti

The Income Tax department attached a total of 12 plots of Misa Bharti and her husband Shailesh Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav, Rabri Devi, and sisters Ragini and Chanda Yadav. Mr. Yadav said he and his family members are being targeted politically.

Lalu Yadav and controversies go hand in hand it seems as he is yet again in trouble and this time it was for Benami Property.

Family members of RJD chief Lalu Prasad including his daughter Misa Bharti are alleged to be involved in Benami land deals and tax evasion case worth Rs 1,000 crore. Tax officials said all six have been served notices of attachment of assets, which identify them as "beneficiaries" of benami property or property purchased in the name of others to hide who really owns them.

Benami Act violations means rigorous imprisonmentof upto seven years and comes with a hefty fine.

Tax department officials had said Lalu Prasad Yadav's kin held some of the properties under their scanner in a "benami" way.

Two summons to Misa were also issued, but after she failed to appear, the I-T department proceeded to seize the properties which were raided in May.

As per official data till May 23, the I-T Department had identified 400 benami transactions in the country and provisional attachment of assets was done in about 240 cases.

Benami properties are those in which the real beneficiary is not the one in whose name the property has been purchased.

"The market value of properties under attachment is more than Rs 600 crore", the I-T data had said.

The RJD chief, however, had sought to put up a fearless face after the raids, saying he was "not scared at all" and would continue to fight against "fascist forces". Lalu ki awaz dabayenge to desh bhar me karoron Lalu khare ho jayenge.
