Ole Miss Releases Statement Regarding NCAA Notice of Allegations

Lack of institutional control and charges leveled by the NCAA against coach Hugh Freeze were deemed Level I violations, the NCAA's most decade. The original case began in 2012 after a university probe discovered academic and recruiting misconduct involving the women's basketball program, but the investigation quickly spread to unrelated issues with football and track and field. Ole Miss claimed in its response that Lewis may have lied about the source of those impermissible benefits and used the investigation as an opportunity to hurt the Ole Miss football program.

"Yet", the response reads, "there are instances in which the University disagrees with the [NCAA] enforcement staff's interpretation of the evidence or its sufficiency".

"The University has robust rules education and compliance monitoring systems, and the University has continuously worked, both before and throughout this investigation to improve and supplement them over time".

The school is pinning former Hugh Freeze assistant Barney Farrar-whose name popped up in draft night text messages that indicated Laremy Tunsil was getting paid while at Ole Miss with a lot of the blame.

The complete 125-page document released by the school includes a response to each of the allegations. While Ole Miss addressed its defense in prepared public statements, this official response moves the legislative process on to the next step: a hearing before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions in Indianapolis.

"In particular, none of the Level I violations in this case could have been prevented, detected, or deterred by any reasonable compliance or monitoring system, especially those violations committed by relatively unknown boosters who acted on their own or individuals who intentionally avoided monitoring systems and hid their actions from the University's compliance and coaching staff".

One of the more intriguing portions regarding Student Athlete 39 are the allegations surrounding a $10,000 cash payment. The university states that in one account of the story, said athlete states that a booster "provided him a wad of $100 bills" and in another interview states that the booster "handed him a bag full of money". Finally, Ole Miss details all the ways it has already disciplined its football program in the introduction.

The university also makes a point to reference the student requested limited immunity from sanctions upon testimony with the NCAA and believes that the student's motive was to discredit the program.

The school also said: "we look forward to appearing before the Committee on Infractions". Attorney Bruse Lloyd claims that "university decision makers chose to lay the blame on Coach Farrar in an attempt to deflect NCAA's probe from them and offer up Coach Farrar as a sacrifice to curry favor with the NCAA".
