Paris police shoot hammer attacker at Notre Dame

Anti-terrorist prosecutors have opened a probe after police shot and injured a man who had tried to attack an officer with a hammer

According to police, the individual shouted that the attack was committed in retaliation for French policy in Syria and called himself a "caliphate warrior" of Daesh terror group, outlawed in Russian Federation. He added that the policeman's injuries were not too serious and that he was in a stable condition.

French gendarmes and police stand at the scene of a shooting incident near the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, June 6, 2017. "Then probably two or three police officers surrounding a guy who was on the floor at this point and as time went on, I could see blood coming out of his leg", he said.

A man is shot after trying to attack police during a potential terror attack outside one of Paris' major landmarks.

In the last fatal attack, a policeman was shot and killed on the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris on April 20. Police told everyone to show their hands so they could be sure no one had a weapon.

Reuters reports that the attacker was shot in the chest and has now been taken to hospital - but his motive remains unclear.

The police department tweeted about the operation on Tuesday afternoon but did not provide any details.

The performance of France's intelligence services have come under close scrutiny since the November 2015 attacks on Paris, when militant gunmen and suicide bombers struck entertainment venues across the capital, killing 130 people.

Documents found on the attacker identified him as a 40-year-old Algerian who was a doctoral student in information science at a university in the east of France.

French prosecutors have reportedly confirmed a counter-terrorism investigation is underway following the incident.

Several of the attacks have targeted police or security officials.

Castaner told RTL radio on Wednesday that the attack was an "isolated act".

Hundreds of people on the esplanade in front of Notre Dame were evacuated and authorities urged people to stay away from the area.

It stands on the eastern end of the Ile de la Cite, built on the ruins of two earlier churches.

A series of Islamic extremist attacks in recent years have put Paris on under high security.
