Queen outlines UK government agenda in scaled-down speech

Progress has been made in talks aimed at reaching a deal for the Democratic Unionist Party to prop up Theresa May's minority government, a DUP MP has said.

The Queen's Speech lacked the usual level of pomp and pageantry, with the Queen ditching her traditional red velvet Robe of State and crown for a blue day dress and hat, and swapping her horse-drawn carriage for a auto.

The state opening of parliament by Queen Elizabeth II came after a string of tragedies which have shaken the nation, and the election on June 8 in which May's Conservatives saw their parliamentary majority wiped out. The Queen invited Trump to Britain, but a date has never been set and United Kingdom media has speculated that the trip may be scrapped due to a lack of public support.

There has been public opposition to Trump's visit because of his policies on immigration, climate change, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and other issues.

A briefing document issued alongside the speech said the government would intensify its consultations with businesses and other interested parties to "test and validate positions and to continue to build support from the business community as we move forward".

The legislative program spelt out a Brexit-dominated set of policies, that indicated May was keen to secure broad support for leaving the European Union - a change in tone from the strident approach she set out before the June 8 election.

Buckingham Palace said that Philip, 96, was admitted a hospital as a precaution for treatment of an infection.

Signaling the importance of Brexit, the queen will set out plans not for the usual one year, but for two years.

The promise follows a snap election in which May lost her majority.

May has left her official London residence, Number 10 Downing Street for Parliament to begin the delicate task of running a minority government by setting out a softer tone on Brexit, as Queen Elizabeth formally opens Parliament.

"The election result was not the one I hoped for, but this Government will respond with humility and resolve to the message the electorate sent", she said. "We will work hard every day to gain the trust and confidence of the British people, making their priorities our priorities".
