"Every federal special election since the beginning of time has a federal component to it".
Republican Congressional candidate Karen Handel made mincemeat of her Democratic opponent Jon Ossoff in a debate Tuesday night that underscored he's definitely not ready for prime time. The liberal blog Daily Kos helped turn Ossoff into an online fundraising phenomenon, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee - criticized for downplaying other House special elections in even redder districts - has been on the ground in the northern Atlanta suburbs for months.
"This is an example of the fundamental difference between a liberal and a conservative: I do not support a livable wage", Handel said, according to Talking Points Memo.
Democrats are hoping to tout an Ossoff win as proof that Mr. Trump is falling out of favor with voters. Handel previously ran for the U.S. Senate and lost, but she perhaps is best known as he woman who nearly single handedly ruined the reputation of breast cancer nonprofit Komen for the Cure, when she tried to defund its support of Planned Parenthood.
Both Ossoff and Handel agreed that in the wake of the I-85 collapse, a focus on Atlanta's transportation infrastructure is needed more than ever.
ATLANTA (AP) - A Republican candidate in a nationally watched Georgia congressional race says she doesn't support a "livable wage".
It is the most expensive congressional race in history. The outcome won't tip the scales in Congress, since Democrats needs to flip 24 Republican seats to regain a majority. But she has not incorporated the President into her campaign messaging with the kind of zeal that Greg Gianforte, the Montana Republican who adopted Trump's "drain the swamp" campaign message and aggressive attitude toward reporters for his successful bid for an at-large House seat last month, did. Later that year, Republicans routed Democrats in the midterms.
The hotly-contested race between Handel and Ossoff will be decided in a run-off election on June 20.
Ossoff had challenged Handel to six debates, and Handel presented four dates, including the CNN debate.
Though she backed the bill, Handel told a personal story - citing a sister born with pre-existing conditions - to underscore her argument that she'd never back a bill that undercut coverage for those with pre-existing conditions.
"I think policies that restrict travel based on country of origin is not the approach", Ossoff said.
He went on to hammer Handel for her tenure as an executive at the Susan G. Komen Foundation. "I do not support a livable wage". Handel resigned amid the controversy. And Ossoff - who supports Planned Parenthood and women's health care - was absolutely right to challenge her on her record because obviously, she has no good answer.
Finally, she said: "I embrace the fact that I led the project". He drew 48.1 percent of the vote, earning a spot in the runoff.
