Syrian refugee studying engineering named as one of first Grenfell fire victims

A Syrian war refugee who escaped to Britain was the first victim to be named in the Grenfell Tower fire in London.

She told The Times he was "an incredible guy" who had come to the United Kingdom three years ago, with his brother Omar, "seeking a better, safer life".

"He survived Assad, the war in Syria, only to die in a tower block in London".

Firefighters have said they expect the number of fatalities to rise and that they do not expect to find anymore survivors in the 1970s building.

Abdulaziz Almashi, the co-founder of the Syria Solidarity Campaign, confirmed the news and said that he met Mr. Alhajali when working for the organisation that promotes freedom, peace and democracy in Syria.

According to Almashi, Alhajali studied civil engineering at the University of West London so he could return to Syria one and help rebuild the country.

Initial reports suggest that al-Haj Ali, 24, tried to escape his flat on the fourteenth floor of the tower block via the emergency staircase, but became trapped by smoke.

He worked for the Syria Solidarity Campaign in the United Kingdom, which calls for peace and democracy in the country.

A young Syrian refugee has been identified as the first victim of the huge fire which gutted an apartment block in London earlier this week.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family and friends".

When the fire reached his flat, he said goodbye to his friend and asked him to say goodbye to his family, who he had been unable to reach.

Mr Alhajali's brother Omar Alhajali was also caught up in the blaze, but managed to escape.

Alhajali had been an engineering student at the University of West London. Commander Stuart Cundy said 17 people are now in critical condition and police are seeking to identify and locate the people who continue to be missing.
