US president wishes Muslims 'warm greetings' for Eid

It also reminds us of the enormous contributions Canada's diverse Muslim community make to our country's cultural richness and economic prosperity.

According to the calculations conducted by the Shamakhi-based Tusi Astrophysical Observatory of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), the 1st of Ramadan-that is, when the moon appears - fell on May 27 this year, APA reported.

The supreme court of Afghanistan confirmed Sunday, the 25th of June, as the first day of Eid-ul-Fitr in the country.

For Muslims, fasting for one month is a religious tradition, where they restrain themselves from food and water between dawn and dusk. So, Eid will be celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, which is the 10th month of Islamic calendar. After they see the new moon, there will be a period where you offer thanks to Allah for helping you practice self-restraint while you were fasting.

Varying geographical and weather conditions meant that people in different locations can not see the appearance of the crescent the same day, making Muslims around the world fast on different days.

Many countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Syria, Iraq, Egypt and others are celebrating Eid al-Fitr on Sunday.

The prime minister said Eid teaches peace, sense of fellow feeling and fraternity and brings the message of joy to the people of all walks of life. Eid starts on Sunday, June 25 (TODAY) and marks the start of a month of celebration. The decision was taken after the new moon was sighted Saturday.

Eid al-Fitr had been celebrated with dinners hosted by three previous administrations.

Reports from London said new moon could not be sighted anywhere in the United Kingdom on Saturday.

Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, some 90,000 Muslims converged on the iconic Al-Aqsa Mosque - which for Muslims represents the world's third holiest site - to perform Eid prayers.
