Andy Murray limps with a sore hip, pulls out of Wimbledon warm-up

The two-times Wimbledon champion, who has spent 36 weeks at the top of the rankings, is still struggling to shake off a hip injury that forced his withdrawal from the Hurlingham Club this week, denying Murray some much-needed practice ahead of next week's first round match.

The 30-year-old was sick for a couple of weeks and was out of action for over a month before making his comeback at the Dubai Tennis Championships, which he won in early March.

The decision was described as a precaution, with Murray still planning to play the second match against an as-yet-unnamed opponent in west London on Friday.

But following Roland Garros - prior to which he teamed up with coach Ivan Lendl for the first time since January - expectation was high of another home win at Wimbledon.

Having suffered a shock first-round loss to late injury replacement Jordan Thompson at Queen's Club last week, Murray was due to play twice at Hurlingham as part of his disrupted preparations for SW19.

"Sadly I won't be ready to play at The Hurlingham tomorrow, my hip is still sore and I need to rest it today, and likely tomorrow", Murray said. "There is no guarantee that I won't do well at Wimbledon, but it certainly would have helped to have had more matches".

Djokovic, who took a wild card into the tournament, is the second-highest ranked men's player ever to compete at Eastbourne behind then-No.

Federer, now favourite with Murray only third in the betting, warned: "Andy needs to feel he could play for 14 days, or seven matches".

World No.3 Stan Wawrinka - overwhelmed by Nadal in the French Open final - has never reached the last four at Wimbledon and hence he has been seeded fifth.
