Charlie Gard team 'must present new evidence' for treatment in US

Mr Justice Francis said the relatives of those children may not want to be confronted by campaigners.

The judge was analysing issues at a hearing in the Family Division of the High Court in London.

- The British parents of critically ill baby Charlie Gard have been told by a hospital lawyer that the results of their son's latest brain scans make for "sad reading".

Last week, Mr Justice Francis suggested that the American specialist - Michio Hirano, a professor of neurology at Columbia University Medical Centre in NY - should travel to London to meet Great Ormond Street doctors and other clinicians.

A spokeswoman for Great Ormond Street acknowledged the hospital had received complaints from families but would not provide further details.

Gollop apologized and said, "almost all the medical evidence in this case makes for sad reading", the association reported.

Mr Justice Francis pointed out that Charlie had been offered nucleoside bypass therapy in January, but the offer was later withdrawn as GOSH concluded that he had already suffered irreversible brain damage and it would not improve his quality of life.

But the couple say there is new evidence and want Mr Justice Francis, who in April ruled in favour of Great Ormond Street and said Charlie should be allowed to die with dignity, to change his mind. The hospital said the treatment would cause suffering and would not help, suggesting that life-support to the baby should stop.

Dr Hirano examined Charlie and discussed his case while visiting Great Ormond Street on Monday and Tuesday. These meetings were arranged after Hirano testified in a previous hearing that Charlie's MRI scan did not necessarily indicate structural damage to the brain.

Last week, he suggested that the American specialist - Michio Hirano, a professor of neurology at Columbia University Medical Centre in NY - should travel to London to meet Great Ormond Street doctors and other clinicians.
