Donald Trump Endorses Police Brutality In Speech To Cops

Donald Trump's Presidency

President Trump spoke to a group of police officers on Long Island, New York, Friday, sparking controversy for his encouragement of physically aggressive policing tactics.

Police departments across the country are hitting back at President Donald Trump after a "joke" he made about roughing up suspects.

Despite applause from the audience, which was comprised of federal and law enforcement personnel from the New York-New Jersey area, the Suffolk County department quickly distanced itself from Trump's statements.

"This country is tired of the type of policing that Trump espouses, having seen over and over again that it only makes it harder for police to investigate and solve crime", he said.

Perhaps the only good news here is that the public seems to see through the Trump administration's efforts to paint all undocumented people as violent criminals.

'If you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of them, would you?' he said.

"Managing use of force is one of the most hard challenges faced by law enforcement agencies", the IAPC wrote in a Friday blog post. Prosecutors said they were lured to the park and then ambushed by at least a dozen MS-13 members wielding machetes and other weapons.

Both Nassau and Suffolk county police departments have consistently touted historic low crime rates in the months and years before Trump's visit. But she says they didn't take her seriously. Here's President Trump speaking this week in Ohio. And we're sending them the hell back home where they came from. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has pushed for a crackdown on MS-13, which has led to hundreds of arrests in Suffolk County. Several times, he said his administration had started "liberating" towns on Long Island, as though they were no longer under control of our government.

"Police can not treat every community like an invading army, and encouraging violence by police is irresponsible and reprehensible", he said.

In reality, the president was just putting across an important message, not only to the nation's law enforcement officers but to citizens who see that the hands of the law are often tied.

Trump's comments about the treatment of people in police custody resurrected memories of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old Baltimore man who was shackled but alive when he was put into a Baltimore police van in April 2015. "We can all respect our law enforcement officers without sanctioning unjust and illegal behavior".
