Elon Musk claims he has approval for NYC-DC hyperloop

Musk says government likes plan for high-speed tunnels

Elon Musk just tweeted that he has "verbal government approval" to build a high-speed hyperloop tunnel that will take New York City residents to Washington, D.C., in 29 minutes. As a result, one could get from NY to D.C.in just 29 minutes.

But the White House confirmed it had "positive discussions" about the tunnel with Musk and executives from his underground drilling enterprise, The Boring Co.

"If you want to get the public fired up, you've got to put a base on the moon", he said, in order to continue the dream of the Apollo missions. For some urban context: the recently opened stretch of subway in NY cost $4.5 billion for less than 2 miles of rails. We bought some second-hand machinery.

"That's one of the nice things about high-speed rail". The machine, dubbed Nannie by the city's water utility, had been used to dig a sewage overflow tunnel. The system would also have stops in Philadelphia and Baltimore. "To make it five times better is not insane hard", he told Bloomberg.

Without clarifying, he also tweeted that a first set of tunnels would be to "alleviate greater LA (Los Angeles) urban congestion", adding that the company would "probably" do a loop from Los Angeles to San Francisco, and another in Texas. Didn't Musk say he wasn't interested in creating a Hyperloop himself? Musk said SpaceX internal accounting said preparing that capsule for its second flight cost "almost as much as building a Dragon 1 from scratch".

For now, the whole California endeavor is on private property, which means that Musk could break ground and start digging without any local or federal permits. Musk did not elaborate on exactly who granted approval to his tunneling venture, The Boring Company. That is, if you believe Elon Musk.

Musk's SpaceX has been working on a Hyperloop test concept and a competitor, Hyperloop One, has tested its LA-SF run. "It would have taken a tremendous amount of effort to qualify that for safety, particularly for crew transport", he said.

Musk didn't say what level of government approved the tunnel/hyperloop system, but they would presumably need approval at several different levels and states since it's going through several cities and states. Visit MarketWatch.com for more information on this news.

To be fair, even Musk anticipates that there are more rings to jump through.

Musk's tweets quickly went viral and drew a slew of responses from reporters and other interested followers, seeking more details on the project.
