Russia Retaliates For Sanctions Approval, Hitting At US Diplomatic Corps

Senator Bob Corker arrives for a health care vote on Capitol Hill in Washington

Russia's retaliation, outlined in a statement from the Foreign Ministry, came a day after the US Senate voted to slap new sanctions on Russian Federation, putting President Donald Trump in a tough position by forcing him to take a hard line on Moscow or veto the legislation and anger his own Republican Party. But President Vladimir Putin at the time delayed the retaliatory steps in what officials said was an olive branch to the incoming Trump administration.

The most consequential piece of legislation that the Republican-led Congress has delivered to President Donald Trump after seven months is a new package of financial penalties against Russian Federation that he didn't want to sign into law. "They're going to hurt us on issues like North Korea, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba", he said. It said it is ordering the U.S. Embassy to reduce the number of embassy and consular employees in the country to 455 in response to the U.S. Senate's approval of a new package of sanctions.

Clearly the Obamacare debacle is an embarrassment for the President and for Republicans, but the new legislation on Russian Federation sanctions - which Trump has not yet signed - should worry him far more.

It is the first major foreign policy legislation approved by Congress under Trump, who has struggled to advance his domestic agenda despite Republicans controlling the Senate and House of Representatives.

He added that possible amendments to the bill would not change the "essence" of the matter.

With that in mind, President Vladimir Putin announced that Russian Federation wouldn't retaliate after the December sanctions, preferring to wait until the Trump administration moved into the White House.

The administration officials and advisers demanded anonymity to discuss the private sanctions deliberations. Reports of Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election have put a damper on hopes for better ties that the Kremlin had pinned on Trump's presidency.

Putin said Moscow would only decide on how to retaliate once it had seen the final text of the proposed law.

Russia is open to cooperating with the US on various issues including terrorism and cybercrime but instead it "only hears unfounded accusations of meddling in USA domestic affairs", the Russian leader said.

"The message coming from Congress on a bipartisan basis is these are hostile regimes and sanctions are warranted - sanctions are called for", Ryan told reporters Thursday.

"We will continue to want to work together". They've argued it would infringe on the president's executive authority and tie his hands as he explores avenues of communication and cooperation between the two former Cold War foes.

Immediately after the United States ordered the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats in December, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recommended a tit-for-tat expulsion of 35 U.S. diplomats and the shuttering of two American facilities in Russia. "He has to show Russian Federation can't be pushed around by the United States".

Moscow is already the subject of tough USA sanctions over its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine and support for a bloody insurgency in the country.

When Trump Jr. dismissed the talks with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya as "mostly about adoption", he essentially admitted the meeting was about sanctions. Russian Federation said it reserved the right to take further measures if the USA retaliates. But he never directly answered questions about whether he believed Putin's claims that Russian Federation had nothing to do with it.

The legislation is aimed at punishing Moscow for interfering in the 2016 presidential election and for its military aggression in Ukraine and Syria, where the Kremlin has backed President Bashar Assad.

The bill underwent revisions to address concerns voiced by American oil and natural gas companies that sanctions specific to Russia's energy sector could backfire on them to Moscow's benefit.
