Southern Alberta shaken by Montana quake

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck western Montana and was felt as far west as Spokane Washington

According to KPAX TV, this was the strongest natural disaster in Montana in 12 years, since a magnitude 5.6 temblor struck near the southwest Montana city of Dillon on July 26, 2005.

CHELAN COUNTY-A 5.8 magnitude quake in western Montana was widely felt early Thursday around the Pacific Northwest. So far no damage has been reported in Montana. A magnitude 4.5 quake was reported just within a half hour of the bigger one.

There was a magnitude-5.6 natural disaster in July 2005, but the last quake in the area to reach this level was a magnitude-6.9 incident in 1983. The local sheriff's office reported that the town of Lincoln, population 800, was without power.

By way of comparison, the deadly Hebgen Lake natural disaster in Southwestern Montana in 1959 was a magnitude 7.3-7.5 on the Richter scale.

We have a reporter in Lincoln and will update as we get more details.

There have been more than 70 quakes measuring larger than 4.5 in Montana and parts of Wyoming and Idaho since 1925, according to the USGS. The last major quake occurred near Dillon, MT in 2005, and was measured as a 5.6 on the Richter scale.

Reports from Helena, southeast of the quake, mentioned a fairly strong aftershock a few minutes after the first shaker. For residents in Spokane, which is the second most-populated city in Washington State, it will be particularly shocking.

Many went on social media to talk about the quake. About 90 years ago, a large natural disaster hit southwest Montana.
