Vivo's officially unveils its under-display fingerprint sensor

The new fingerprint scanner uses Qualcomm's new ultrasonic technology which sends a pulse through the finger, some of which gets reflected while some get absorbed. They are also operable underwater and they have a function that detects the heartbeat, as well as the blood flow. The second phase - always the more exciting phase - is really what we've been waiting for: in-display fingerprint scanning. The ultrasonic sensors can scan through 800 micrometers of the cover glass, while the previous limit was 400 micrometers.

These fingerprint sensors are designed for the new line of Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, but they might be compatible with other chips as well. The sensor for Display will be available for OEMs in the fourth quarter of 2017. The difference and major advantage for Qualcomm's technology would be the ability operate through metal and water in addition to glass. First of all, the fingerprint sensor worked a lot slower than those on Apple and Samsung devices.

"With the Snapdragon 450, users are going to see a dramatically improved level of performance, connectivity, battery life and imaging performance", said Kedar Kondap, vice-president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies. The modified smartphone was fitted with Qualcomm's under-display fingerprint scanner and the company also mentioned that the solution doesn't require a physical button for the scanner. The prototype has Qualcomm's new sensor fitted beneath the display, according to Engadget.

Qualcomm is set to release their new sensors to OEMs starting this month, to facilitate the debut of devices with Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors in 2018. The upcoming iPhone 8 was expected to be the first smartphone fingerprint scanner under the display, and it may well be true if Vivo fails to commercially launch before Apple.

Bear in mind, however, that it's just a prototype device, and Vivo doesn't even know when such technology will be available in its devices.

Before the Samsung Galaxy S8 was unveiled, tech enthusiasts and the press were hoping for the under-the-screen fingerprint scanner to make a debut on Samsung's 2017 flagship, considering the leaks hinting at a bezel-less design.
