Woman throws coins at plane's engines for luck

The flight - China Southern Airlines service CZ380 - was held back for several hours at Shanghai Pudong International Airport while the engine was inspected.

She was then taken away by police after another passenger reported her behavior. Often you must have seen Indians tossing coins out of a train's window at a river body below when the train passes over a bridge.

The elderly passenger threw nine coins into the plane engine.

Qiu has no previous criminal record, and her motivation appears to have been nothing more than a misguided attempt to ensure a safe trip for herself and her fellow passengers. "According to Qiu's neighbor, Qiu believes in Buddhism".

The pilot told the media that the coins could have inflicted serious damage on the engine if they had not been detected.

Another passenger noticed the elderly woman, identified only as Qiu, "behaving strangely" ahead of the China Southern Airlines flight.

She tossed the coins from the middle of the boarding stairway.

Travelers were left fuming in Shanghai airport after a China Southern Airlines flight got delayed by over five hours due to a freakish incident, reports said.

The flight eventually took off at 5.52pm local time, more than five hours behind schedule, and was due to arrive in Guangzhou at 8.14pm.

News of the incident caused a fair amount of turbulence on the social media site Weibo, with one user commenting: "Grandma, this is not a wish fountain with turtles".
