36 killed, dozens injured as trains collide in Alexandria, Egypt

Egyptian security personnel examine wreckage after two passenger trains collided in Alexandria Egypt

Dr Abu Homs, head of the city's ambulance services, said he fears the death toll and number of injured could rise further.

A medical official told state TV some wounded people were still stuck in the trains.

At least 36 people were killed as two trains collided Friday outside the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, in one of the deadliest in a string of such accidents in Egypt, the health ministry said.

The statement did not say what caused the accident, saying only that the authority's experts would be investigating.

The deadly incident reportedly took place in the Khorshid district on Alexandria's outskirts.

As rescue teams pulled dead and injured from the damaged rail wagons, public prosecutor Nabil Sadek ordered an urgent investigation.

Egyptians have long complained that successive governments failed to enforce basic safeguards for the railways.

And earlier, in 2002, a massive fire engulfed a train filled with local holiday travelers.

In 2012, a collision between a train and a school bus on a rail crossing killed 51 people, mostly children, in the town of Manaflut.

Nearly a year later, a collision between a train and a bus killed 27 people south of Cairo.

One resident, Hoda, was standing on her rooftop when she saw the trains collide.
