Russia's doping crisis continued on Wednesday as the All-Russia Athletic Federation banned six athletes for failing tests.

On July 31, the IAAF Council unanimously voted to uphold the ban on the RusAF, although it also recognised that the federation had made progress in its bid for reinstatement.

"It is a measure of the man and an important step on the road to rehabilitation of Russian athletics that he's willing to acknowledge that offence publicly".

A number of Russian athletes, however, have been granted permission by the IAAF to compete as neutrals after meeting the exceptional eligibility criteria, essentially demonstrating that they've come through transparent anti-doping testing.

A return to the fold remains unlikely before 2018 after the head of the IAAF's Task Force, Rune Andersen, said on Monday that Russian Federation had yet to meet several of the criteria for reinstatement.

The head of Russia's athletics federation (RusAF), Dmitry Shlyakhtin, apologised to the members of the Congress for the mistakes of the past and asked that the ban be lifted.

"Our main goal is to do everything possible to be sure that our athletes are clean", Shlyakhtin added.

Andersen had revealed following the IAAF Council meeting on Monday (July 31) that Russian Federation needed to show more remorse before he could consider recommending their reinstatement.

"There have been some bumps along the way, usually in the form of political statements or interventions that have not been entirely helpful".

Shylakhtin explained there was considerable resistance to his new team from the old RusAF regime but the situation had completely changed now, both within the sport and at the highest levels of government.

"I want to pay tribute to Dmitry Shlyakhtin and the colleagues he brought with him when he was elected as RusAF President in early 2016".

Easily the biggest name of all is eleven time world champion Usain Bolt, who this year has gradually been waving goodbye to the athletics world after announcing his plans to retire at the world championships.

Others who joined Jamaica in publicly supporting Russian Federation were Bangladesh, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Jordan, Lebanon, Macau, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nauru, Nigeria, Panama, Peru, Romania, North Korea, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Syria, Tajikistan, Vietnam and Yemen.

Andersen claimed being readmitted to worldwide athletics remained within their own control.

Andersen said: "Their fate is in their own hands and they can complete this without much further delay, perhaps as soon as November".
