Boy Scouts: Top Leaders Didn't Call Trump to Praise Speech

Trump Claims Boy Scouts Chief Loved His Speech, Even Though The Group Later Apologized

"I got a call from the head of the Boy Scouts saying it was the greatest speech that was ever made to them, and they were very thankful", Trump said.

The Associated Press reported that Boy Scout leaders anticipated Trump would make controversial remarks, yet felt obliged to invite him out of respect for the office.

"The Chief Scout Executive's message to the Scouting community speaks for itself", the organization said in a statement seen by Time magazine, referring to an earlier statement from the group's chief executive Michael Surbaugh that apologized for Trump's comments.

Days earlier, in the WSJ interview, Trump said his speech to the Boy Scouts in Virginia - partisan, disjointed and often rambling - had been praised by the organization.

During Wednesday's White House press briefing, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders bristled at ABC News' Cecilia Vega's suggestion that the president had "lied" about receiving a phone call from the head of the Boy Scouts, seconds after confirming that the president had never received the phone call.

The audience booed Obama in response to Trump's question.

Trump's assertion that the leaders called his speech "the greatest ever made to them" appears to stand in contradiction to reality. It specified that neither of the organization's two top leaders - President Randall Stephenson and Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh - had placed such a call. "We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program".

'I won't go any more than that, because you're Boy Scouts, so I'm not going to tell you what he did, ' Trump said.

Speaking last Monday before about 40,000 Scouts, Trump delivered a speech that would not have been out of place on his campaign or in his tweets. It is in no way an endorsement of any person, party or policies.

In his statement, Surbaugh also said that the Boy Scouts have remained "steadfastly non-partisan" despite many attempts by outside parties to have them take positions on political issues.

"They loved it. It wasn't - it was no mix", the president said.
