Dara Khosrowshahi: New CEO of Uber, Boards Picks Him!!!

The New York Times reported that Uber's board was not able to close on terms with Whitman, at which point the company extended the offer to Khosrowshahi, whose candidacy had largely been kept under wraps. Uber has been without a chief financial officer since 2015, and the company's head of finance left the company at the end of May.

Previously, Khosrowshahi led IAC Travel, which bought Expedia in 2003. Khosrowshahi will face the hard task of changing Uber's culture that has included sexual harassment and allegations of deceit and corporate espionage.

Prior to the IAC/Expedia spin-off, Khosrowshahi was CEO of IAC Travel, a division of IAC, where he helped expand IAC's portfolio of travel brands, which now comprise Expedia. "If Dara does leave us, it will be to my great regret but also my blessing - he's devoted 12 great years to building this company and if this is what he wants for his next adventure it will be with my best wishes".

Though Kalanick never endorsed Trump (and in fact signed an open letter from the tech industry criticizing his travel ban), Uber's year of controversies began in January when customers organized #DeleteUber, a social-media-driven boycott in protest of Kalanick's decision to join Trump's advisory council. "I find that sad and very much against what our founders set out to build".

For example, Google self-driving vehicle division Waymo sued Uber and its chief autonomous auto architect, Anthony Levandowski, charging that Uber knew Levandowski had stolen proprietary tech from Google before he sold his self-driving truck company, Otto, to Uber last summer.

Uber spokespeople were not immediately available for comment. He'll succeed co-founder Travis Kalanick, who grew Uber into a US$20 billion (S$27b) annual booking business a year ago before scandals forced him out.

Uber's search for the next CEO has finally seen a conclusion. Both Kalanick and Benchmark had their own candidate to become the next CEO. Khosrowshahi, the current CEO of Expedia Inc (NASDAQ: EXPE), was considered to be a. He also serves on the boards of Fanatics Inc. and The New York Times Co.

Before IAC, Khosrowshahi - who has a degree from Brown University in electrical engineering - served as a vice president of investment banking firm Allen & Co. It won't be an easy challenge for him as the company has already spiraled down, but this will be a new step forward for Uber.

He is not the female CEO Uber had hoped to hire to remedy its image as a workplace hostile toward women, but as a vocal advocate for immigrants his hiring is likely to hit the right note with many in the predominantly liberal-leaning technology community.

Khosrowshahi is expected to officially announce his acceptance of the Uber job on Monday or Tuesday, according to Recode, which first reported news of his appointment.
