Donald Trump finally condemns 'evil' racism after Charlottesville

As the saber-rattling and war of words between Donald Trump and North Korea intensifies, the U.S. president called up the governor of Guam to reassure him of America's support.

North Korea's bluster about launching missiles began after Trump ad-libbed a line during a press briefing at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf course about confronting the country with a "fire and fury like the world has never seen" if it continued to make belligerent threats against the U.S.

Of course, if the United States determines that North Korea has launched a missile targeting the U.S., the President would have to decide whether to retaliate.

A White House statement said Trump and President Emmanuel Macron had discussed "the increasingly risky situation associated with North Korea's destabilising and escalatory behaviour". "We hope to see them improve mutual trust, and move toward the goal of preserving peace and stability on the peninsula as well as realizing the denuclearization of the peninsula".

China's Global Times newspaper, a state-run tabloid, was scathing of South Korea's decision to proceed with the drills.

That would bring relations with the US back to the status quo, but not change things much on the ground in North Korea.

Trump assured Calvo that "We are behind you 1,000 percent".

These are among the guidelines Guam has released as, amid escalating tensions with North Korea, the small Pacific island contemplates the nightmare scenario of a nuclear strike.

Xi also reiterated his support for a nuclear-free North Korea.

Mattis was asked whether decisions had already been made about how to respond in the event a North Korean missile lands in the waters off Guam.

Ms Gaminde's remarks comes after North Korea announced earlier on Thursday that the nation has a detailed plan for a missile strike near Guam, where about 7,000 United States troops are stationed, using four intermediate-range ballistic rockets.

"And your tourism, I can say this, your tourism is going to go up like tenfold with the expenditure of no money, so I congratulate you", Trump said in prescient tone.

While immediate confirmation of the reports was not available, Japan has in the past vowed to shoot down North Korean missiles or rockets that threaten to hit its territory.

While North Korea regularly threatens to destroy the U.S. and its allies, the report was unusual in its detail.

They said the United States and its allies no longer can afford to stand by as North Korea pushes ahead with the development of a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile.

Called Ulchi-Freedom Guardian, the exercises are expected to run August 21-31 and involve tens of thousands of American and South Korean troops on the ground and in the sea and air.

North and South Korea are celebrating Liberation Day on Tuesday, marking the anniversary of the victory over Japan in World War II and the creation of the two independent Korean governments in 1948.

On Friday, the USA president again added fuel to the fire, saying that if Pyongyang "acts unwisely", Washington has military solutions "locked and loaded". But it also reported that leader Kim Jong Un would watch US conduct before giving his orders for the test. Guam elects a delegate to the U.S. House, but that delegate isn't allowed to vote on a bill's final passage. It also could refer to the B-1B bombers that the USA has occasionally flown over the Korean Peninsula as a show of force. They should have had me eight years ago, somebody with my thought process, because that was the time.

To that point, the president's comments were appropriate coming from someone in his position - but with a typical addition of Trump braggadocio. "Perhaps she is referring to Germany". "I need a certain amount of ambiguity on this because I am not going to tell them what I'll do in each case".

By evening, he seemed to have mellowed a bit.

"I just wanted to pay my respect", Trump said to Calvo over the phone. "Nobody loves a peaceful solution better than President Trump". It's a odd situation because you have a government in North Korea who fears people want to overthrow it and no-one wants to overthrow it because it would be too expensive to deal with the aftermath.

At the same time, though, Kim urged the USA leadership to pursue de-escalation efforts in the ongoing tensions.
