HBO Plays Down Threat of Hacked Internal Emails

A Star India spokesperson confirmed the leak: "This confirms the compromise of episode 4 of Game of Thrones Season 7, earlier this afternoon", the spokesperson said.

On Friday morning, a Reddit community called /r/FreeFolk reported that the full fourth episode of "Game of Thrones" season seven, "Spoils of War", was now available to download.

Hackers have leaked the upcoming episode of Game of Thrones online two days before it was set to air on HBO.

The reported leak came from one of HBO's worldwide network partners - Star India - which has access to the episodes before they air.

The first four episodes of Season 5 were leaked online ahead of the release date and a Season 6 episode was accidentally shared a day early.

Instead, this episode leak stems from a security breach at HBO distribution partner Star India.

This is a developing story. A reported 1.5 terabytes of information was stolen, but precisely what it contains beyond the programming content is not yet known. However, an insider at HBO believes the leak is not believed to part of the major hack of HBO.

In a statement given by HBO, it states that: "We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cyber-security firms", it added. Sony struggled in the aftermath of its huge hack in 2014, which leaked embarrassing employee emails as well as films, along with their personal financial data. If the attackers don't want money, one could surmise that they're simply out to damage HBO and seemingly increases the likelihood that stolen data will eventually be leaked online.

Entertainment Weekly published a letter sent to the company's staff by the HBO chairman Richard Plepler.

HBO has had to battle with Game of Thrones leaks a number of times in the past.

"Any intrusion of this nature is obviously disruptive, unsettling, and disturbing for all of us." continued Piepler.
