Houston convention centre shelters flood victims

Dallas Opens Third Shelter for Harvey Flooding Victims

Those fleeing the wrath and aftermath of Hurricane Harvey are arriving by any means possible. Seeing the influx of families and with classes starting the Mayor said city leaders will have to start thinking about what to do with all the school-age children who are among the evacuees. The shelter, which has been set up in the parking garage level of the Convention Center, has 5,000 beds. The center still needs cots, blankets and towels, but McCasland discouraged people from donating large amounts of clothing, unless they were in larger sizes. Showers are now being set up, doctors are on site and there is a fully functioning pharmaceutical area and emergency room. "It's wonderful. It just goes to show you how awesome the people who live here are".

"Underneath the president's disaster declaration, we have turned on what we call individual assistant programs", Uccellini said. "If you remember what happened in Katrina, everybody went to the Superdome, and then they started busing people out". "My heart goes out to them".

The city of Dallas, along with the Red Cross, has opened shelter after shelter this weekend. And he said the state has assured the city that all expenses it incurs will be paid for.

Meanwhile, down in Houston, there is no indication the water will stop rising anytime soon.

Frustration grew in some places, more than three days after the storm ravaged the Texas coastline as a Category 4 hurricane before transforming into a tropical storm that now sits parked over the Gulf of Mexico ahead of an expected return to shore.

On Tuesday morning a few storm victims made their way to the Wilkerson-Greines Athletic Center at 5201 Ca Roberson Boulevard, but the number of people arriving is expected to pick up throughout the day. Dallas officials said the state of Texas will pay the cost associated with accepting the evacuees.

As Harvey continues to batter southeastern Texas, thousands of residents from the region's two biggest cities are huddling into convention centers for shelter.

The goal is to "try to replace some of those comforts of home that they've lost", Spivey told CNN.

Alicia Barron, 21, and her husband arrived at the Irving shelter after being rescued from their second floor apartment in Dickinson.

"I can't even begin to tell you how generous North Texas is right now", Garrett said.
