Jaguars retain rights to Branden Albert should he play again

Jaguars left tackle Branden Albert retired July 31 but may be on his way back to the team

Albert participated in the team's mandatory three-day minicamp in mid-June and reported for training camp with the rest of the team's veterans on July 26.

The Jaguars confirmed that Albert - who retired July 31 after three practices - reached out to the team last Friday and wanted to explore a return to the team. It appears Albert has changed his mind once again in a rollercoaster of an offseason that has to leave the Jags wondering.

The Jaguars will play their first preseason game on Thursday against the New England Patriots. Albert worked out with the team's first team offense the first day of training camp, but Robinson over the next two days took reps with the first team.

Jacksonville placed Albert on the exempt/left squad list last week. Four days later, Albert approached the team about returning to the National Football League at a later date.

The former Chiefs and Dolphins offensive tackle would reportedly owe the Jaguars $3.4 million in signing-bonus forfeiture if he were to remain retired.

Once training camp began, Albert was competing with rookie Cam Robinson for the starting left tackle positon. Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network report that the team has "many things to work out" with Albert if he wants to return. Albert's contract wasn't guaranteed, but he could have made almost $9 million this upcoming season.

Albert hasn't played a full season since 2011 when he was with Kansas City, who selected him 15th overall in 2008. The machinations ahead will be about maximizing an asset, whether that means spinning off Albert to another tackle-needy team or perhaps regaining a draft pick, or both.

The Albert question started Coughlin's brisk five-minute session with reporters, his first group session since the final night of the NFL Draft on April 30.

Albert had two years remaining on the five-year contract he signed with Miami in 2014.
