Kathy Griffin shaves head amid sister's cancer battle

The comedienne has kept a low profile due to controversy that erupted in May when she posed in

Kathy Griffin has shaved her head to show support for her sister Joyce, who's now battling cancer.

Ever since coming under intense fire after posing for a picture holding a mockup of a severed and bloodied head resembling Donald Trump, Griffin has been keeping a low profile. On Monday, writer Yashar Ali tweeted two images of Griffin rocking a bold new look and a big smile on her face. In a social media post, followers are encouraged to donate to the American Cancer Society.

"The case is closed", Griffin tweeted Friday. Her mom, Maggie Griffin, who appeared on Griffin's show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, responded by praising the star online.

Amid the backlash when the photo was published, Griffin lost a New Year's Eve gig with CNN, and a scolding from the commander-in-chief.

This time it's her head that everyone is talking about.

It is not clear why type of cancer Joyce is battling.

Nevertheless, the Griffins seem to be back in high spirits, notwithstanding another cancer diagnosis in the family, as Kathy and their mother Maggie do everything in their power to remain optimistic while supporting their beloved Joyce. In 2014, her older brother Gary Griffin passed away at 63-years-old after a more than two-year battle with stage-four esophageal cancer. Apparently, having a cancer battle is no less than an easy journey.

That's a lovely way for Griffin, 56, to shift focus away from a particularly rough professional period in favor of something critically important - to show strength with and for her sibling.

The 56-year-old stars sister is now undergoing chemotherapy, reported People magazine. Meanwhile, it looked as if her followers have changed their perspective towards her following the certain feud she faced with the President of the United States.
