Louisiana's 'Cajun Navy' returns to help Houston hurricane victims

'Cajun Navy' headed to Houston to offer Harvey help, report says

Looters made a decision to pose as people needing rescue and they attempted to overtake the boats and there were shots fired at the boats.

A group of East Texans left for Houston Tuesday morning.

Jumping in, these courageous Americans helped save hundreds of victims from the flood waters. They're a group of people who move in with their fleet of private boats to help those stranded as a result of flooding.

"Because Louisiana has always had its fair share of hurricanes and everybody has always showed up for us, so it's time to give back", Brandon said.

"We see neighbour helping neighbour, friend helping friend and stranger helping stranger".

The Cajun Coast Search and Rescue team, a Louisiana volunteer group is composed of anyone who owns a boat and wants to rescue flood victims.

Rescuers trying to help people in storm-ravaged Texas have reported being shot at.

Have you been following the floods in Texas? "I was saying it was like Titanic, because ... we had boarded up everything and it's coming in and we're like, "We're not going to be able to stop this, it's not going to stop", she said.

Louisiana may not have the biggest economy or rank the highest in education, but when it comes to culture and community, we can't be beat.

Last August, the Cajun Navy came to the rescue of stranded Louisiana residents during a time of record rainfall that put many homes underwater. "She floated right to the boat". Those statements get interrupted by gurgling floodwater, the pounding of rain on windshields and even shouts of "anybody home?" as boaters make their way through flooded neighborhoods.

"My entire living room is full of water", Hyatt said.

"Everyone likes to take things and exaggerate it", he said of reports going around that people had been shot, adding, "CNN I used to call it completely negative news and I usually don't talk to them but they caught us off guard, they called, talked to them, let them know what was going on".

"There's looters out here like anytime you have a natural disaster". "Our goal is to help people get out if they are trapped in their homes or apartments, get them to safety".
