No progress on Sanchez talks: Wenger

Alexis Sanchez

"In the previous year, he has made huge progress and I want him to stay here for a long time".

Sanchez has now entered the final year of his contract and has so far refused to sign an extension.

"At the moment he is a player who goes into the final year of his contract and prepares for the season. We will work on that as well".

"That (possibly allowing Sanchez to leave for free) is a effect of what I say, yes, unfortunately".

"We have to make a choice between efficiency on the field and financial interest".

Wenger has now suggested that Sanchez will run down his current contract, which means that he will be able to leave for nothing next summer. "Most of time if you can find a good compromise it is better, but in this case I think I will prioritise the sporting side".

Oxlade-Chamberlain, meanwhile, has reportedly been targeted by Chelsea and Liverpool, but Wenger is in no mood to lose him and insists he will not give up hope of keeping any of his stars.

Felicevich isn't expecting City to walk away from a deal despite Wenger's defiance and expects Guardiola to come back to the table with a larger offer that may force Arsenal's hand.

"It's important you have a serene atmosphere inside and clarity about your commitment. It's important that the players are not half in and half out, but completely in".

Wenger is adamant Oxlade-Chamberlain will remain and predicted great things for him. "I'm convinced he will be the English player that everybody will look at in the next two years".

Wenger was speaking ahead of Arsenal's trip to Stoke on Saturday, where Sanchez will again miss out, and said that there had been no headway made on tying the former Barcelona man down to a new contract.

"It's better for the season, for our psychological comfort as a manager".
