Pakistan could lose 'Major Non-NATO Ally Status': Rex Tillerson

Islamabad leaders to Trump: Don't scapegoat Pakistan

Relations between Pakistan and the USA have fluctuated widely over the decades with Washington frequently accusing Islamabad of fueling the Taliban insurgency and destabilising Afghanistan.

A Pakistani resident watches a live broadcast of US President Donald Trump delivering his address. He said Washington could "no longer be silent about Pakistan's safe havens for terrorist organizations".

Meanwhile, former High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, stated that American consent towards Indian intervention in Afghanistan is critical and a serious issue.

The Pakistan Foreign Office said Trump had ignored the contributions and sacrifices Pakistan had made in fighting terrorism. These include ending or reducing United States aid and military assistance to Pakistan and rescinding Pakistan's status as a non-Nato partner.

Trump had slammed Pakistan for its continued support to terrorist groups and warned Islamabad of consequences if it continued to do so.

"The Committee observed that Pakistan has consistently supported all worldwide efforts for a stable and peaceful Afghanistan", the council's statement said.

Congressman Kevin Cramer, too, applauded Trump for applying pressure on Pakistan.

National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson Michael Anton has warned that President Donald Trump is planning to impose sanctions on terrorists including the Haqqani network having links to the Pakistan Governemnt and has outrightly dismissed its allegations against India's encirclement through Afghanistan.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, while underlining the measures the Trump administration can take to prevent Pakistan from allegedly supporting the Afghan Taliban, has also reminded India of the need to "take some steps of rapprochement" for improving ties with Pakistan.

Trump's South Asia plan is meant to force the Taliban to accept that they "will not win a battlefield victory", Tillerson said.

"No country in the world has suffered more than Pakistan from the scourge of terrorism, often perpetrated from outside our borders", it said in a statement.

"As a matter of policy, Pakistan does not allow use of its territory against any country", the foreign ministry said.

Citing the ambitious China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Hua lauded Pakistan's support to the United States dollars 50 billion project.

"We would like to see effective and immediate USA military efforts to eliminate sanctuaries harbouring terrorists and miscreants on Afghan soil, including those responsible for fomenting terror in Pakistan", the Prime Minister's office said in a statement, one of the strongest ever responses to Washington.

Pakistan estimates there have been 70,000 casualties in militant attacks, including 17,000 killed, since it joined the U.S.
