Pentagon denies civilians killed in Afghanistan airstrike

US airstrike kills several civilians in Afghanistan

According to the source, the incident took place in Haska Mina district when an airstrike targeted a civilian vehicle on Thursday evening.

According to the statement, a US airstrike killed a number of militants and destroyed their vehicle in the Haska Mina district in Nangarhar.

The United States military has deployed Special Forces and airstrikes against Islamic State group militants in Afghanistan and said it has killed dozens of the group's leaders and hundreds of fighters this year.

Meantime, Governor of Dawlatabad district Abdul Salam Nazhat has confirmed the gruesome event but said nine civilians including women and children had lost their lives and five more sustained injuries. Officials added that because the vehicles were in the middle of nowhere "there was zero chance of civilian casualties".

Attaullah Khogyani, the spokesman for Nangarhar province's governor, confirmed that casualties had occurred but declined to give details.

Mohammada Khan told the Times that six people in his family were killed in a minibus they were fleeing in.

Friends and family pray during a funeral procession for victims of a US airstrike in the Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, Aug. 8, 2017. "It was not a valley or a mountainous area".

The civilians were reportedly attempting to flee an ISIS advance when they were killed by a US airstrike. "It was a clear area, and they should understand that people in the vehicle are civilians, as the auto was a civilian auto". "This is the second false claim of civilian casualties in the same district within the last three weeks", the military said in a news release. The previous attack targeted a prayer ceremony, and the US similarly claimed that the praying civilians were "ISIS members".
