Sushma slams Rahul for meeting Chinese Ambassador

Chinese goods boycot

China on Thursday said India should show through deeds its willingness to maintain peace at the border and claimed that 48 Indian soldiers were at Doka La area backed by a "large number" of troops at the border to halt Chinese attempts to build a road on its side of the boundary.

Earlier, a combined Opposition attacked the Centre and said India stands isolated in the neighbourhood - a claim Swaraj denied.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said India is engaged with China to resolve differences, not only on the stand-off at Doklam but all matters such as general border disputes, the issue of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and the blocking of United Nations sanctions against Jaish-e-Mohammad terror outfit chief Masood Azhar.

New Delhi: India has not pulled out its troops in Doklam where they are locked in a stand off with the Chinese army for almost two months, government sources said on Wednesday, rebuffing a claim by China that fewer Indian troops were stationed in the area in Sikkim sector. If China were to capture Bhutan's high-altitude Doklam plateau, it would not only mitigate that vulnerability but also hold a knife to India's jugular vein he Siliguri Corridor, through which Bhutan's communications and transportation arteries also pass.

The two sides' troops then confronted each other close to a Chinese valley that separates India from its close ally Bhutan. Instead, it flagrantly dispatched armed forces carrying equipment to illegally cross the boundary to obstruct China's road building.

He said, "The Chinese side was convinced that the right could not be wronged and justice would prevail".

On July 2, China emphatically rejected India's interference in its ongoing boundary dispute with Bhutan in the Doklam area and again urged New Delhi to withdraw unconditionally and end the almost two-month long stand-off.

New Delhi, she added, would continue to engage with China to solve the differences.

Deep-seated mutual distrust has long characterized Sino-Indian relations, plagued by the legacy of the 1962 border war, India's playing host to exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and China's ever-deepening ties to India's regional rival Pakistan.

The border stand-off with China can not be resolved through war but should be settled bilateral talks, the government told Parliament on Thursday while asking for patience and time to address the Doklam issue.

"India is deeply concerned at the recent Chinese actions and has conveyed to the Chinese government that such construction would represent a significant change of status quo with serious security implications for India".

"The China-Bhutan boundary issue is one between China and Bhutan. As a third party, India has no right to interfere in or impede the boundary talks between China and Bhutan, still less the right to make territorial claims on Bhutan's behalf".

India's intrusion into the Chinese territory under the pretext of Bhutan has not only violated China's territorial sovereignty but also challenged Bhutan's sovereignty and independence. It's also very clear that China shares border with 14 countries and has some or the other dispute with each of them.

The conflict stems from the 19th-century Calcutta Convention between colonial Britain and Qing dynasty China, which demarked the border between Sikkim and Tibet.
