Trump savages Richard Blumenthal on Twitter

Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut brought up potential'collusion in an interview Monday

Veering off his traditional grousing about the media, President Donald Trump marked the start of a 17-day vacation Monday with a Twitter attack on Democratic Sen.

In one of his tweets, Trump said that it was interesting watching Blumenthal talking about the Russian collusion (which he referred to as a hoax) when he was a phony, a con artist who lied about his Vietnam service.

Blumenthal is now serving his second term as a USA senator from CT, first elected in 2010 and then re-elected in 2016. He told stories about his Vietnam battles and....

"He cried like a baby and begged for forgiveness like a child", Trump continued. 'Now he judges collusion?', questioned the President. Before and while running for his Senate seat, Blumenthal talked about having served in Vietnam, but in 2010, a New York Times investigation revealed the senator had never served in Vietnam.

Trump's Twitter fusillade was apparently set off by Blumenthal's appearance on CNN earlier Monday in which he spoke about the investigation into the Trump campaign's alleged ties to Russian Federation.

As for Trump's base, the Gallup Organization has reported that Trump has a historic low for newly elected presidents in their first summer on the job.

While he avoided the particulars of the misstatements about Vietnam, Blumenthal said the Trump Tweets were just another signal of the likelihood that legislative action to protect Mueller may be required in short order.

The president again tweeted about Blumenthal Monday evening.

He tweeted out telling Trump that his bullying had not worked previously and was not going to now.

Trump had five deferments of his own during the Vietnam War, "four for college, one for bad feet.", as a headline in the Times reported past year.

Trump's description of the senator as a "Vietnam con artist" was seemingly a reference to speeches Blumenthal made implying he had served in Vietnam. "What I do know about is I will not be distracted by this bullying".

I don't think the U.S. president should launch personal attacks on U.S. Senators via Twitter. After The New York Times exposed the mistruths in 2010, he apologized at a press conference flanked by veterans. He also received a high number in the draft lottery, which is the reason Trump usually gives in public for his lack of service. "This issue isn't about me - it's about the Special Counsel's independence and integrity".
