Will N. Korea's Kim Pull the Trigger? Possible Signs to Watch

The United States would "take out" any North Korean missile seen to be heading for American soil, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Monday.

And he warned that 'if they fire at the United States, it could escalate into war very quickly'.

North Korea has claimed it will have a plan for a missile strike targeting Guam prepared by mid-August - a threat that has led to President Trump insisting that Kim Jong-Un will "truly reget" any move against Guam or any other U.S. territory.

Graham said for decades presidents on both sides of the aisle have warned about North Korea's nuclear program but none of them have stopped it.

Meanwhile, North Korea leader Kim Jong Un was already briefed with the plan to fire missiles toward Guam, however, the North Korean leader will wait for US' next move.

South Korean President Moon Jae-In also waded in on yesterday, calling for calm in the standoff with North Korea, saying there should never be another war on the peninsula.

If the USA determines the missile would fall into the sea short of Guam, he said "it becomes an issue we take up however the president chooses".

They stress that the USA has no interest in regime change or accelerated reunification of Korea, and does not seek an excuse to garrison USA troops north of the demilitarised zone - this last point is aimed at China.

Meanwhile, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe used a telephone call on Tuesday to praise Mr Trump's commitment to protect U.S. allies in the region and halt missile launches from Pyongyang.

China, North Korea's only major ally, has urged restraint.

But how many more ambassadors are participating in the meeting is unclear. The meeting comes at a juncture when China issued an order imposing economic sanctions on North Korea.

The op-ed by Tillerson and Mattis in The Wall Street Journal stresses the US's efforts to get the global community, especially China and the UN Security Council, on board with denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

The North's nuclear tests have also irked the US.

The U.S. -sponsored resolution was in response to North Korea's launch of two intercontinental ballistic missiles last month, activities prohibited under existing United Nations resolutions.

To achieve this goal, Tillerson and Mattis call on China to reassess its interests and cut off trade with North Korea.

"You don't shoot at people in this world unless you want to bear the consequences", the secretary said.

"We've been receiving these kind of threats as many people have, many of our neighbors in Asia have been on the receiving end of the threats".

"And your tourism, I can say this, your tourism is going to go up like tenfold with the expenditure of no money, so I congratulate you", Trump added.
