Cowboys' value climbs to $4.8bn atop Forbes' NFL list

You'll notice that the Cowboys ($4.8 billion) are almost worth more than the Bengals, Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills combined ($5.1 billion).

If Jerry Jones ever decides to sell the Dallas Cowboys, someone is going to have to write him a monstrous check because the team is now worth almost $5 billion.

That's up from $770 million in 2012, when owner Shad Khan purchased the team from Wayne and Delores Weaver, according to Forbes.

With an estimated worth of $4.8 billion, the Dallas Cowboys are the league's most valuable team for the 11th straight year, Forbes said.

Despite a Super Bowl hangover that the Carolina Panthers couldn't quite shake last season, the team's net worth has surged to $2.3 billion. The other four were Tampa Bay ($1.975), Cleveland ($1.95), Cincinnati ($1.8) and Detroit ($1.7).

The average franchise received an eight percent bump in value this year. So, as with the team's playoff drought, there's always hope for next year.

At nearly $5bn, Jerry Jones' team is the most valuable franchise in any sport worldwide.

Teams with new or renovated stadium salso saw a rise in value. Forbes reported this year that the average Major League Baseball franchise is worth US$1.54 billion.

Globally, according to Forbes' rankings of July, the Cowboys are followed by baseball's New York Yankees at US$3.7 billion, a figure the Patriots have now tied.
