Hillary Clinton, in interview, reflects on 'very painful' loss

CBS Sunday Morning

During an interview with Jane Pauley on CBS Sunday Morning, she said she was "done with being a candidate". "I am done being a candidate", she said.

"Yes, as an active politician, it's over".

When Mr Trump delivered his inaugural address on January 20, Ms Clinton sat on the dais behind him, with her husband, Bill Clinton, and his former presidents George W Bush and Jimmy Carter.

Her promise shoots down speculation from this year that she might mount a future campaign for national office or mayor of New York City. Bernie Sanders for making what she said were unrealistic campaign promises, and Vice President Joe Biden for his criticisms of her inability to connect with some white working class voters.

In her narration of the report, Pauley said Clinton still seemed "gobsmacked" over the defeat at the hands of Donald Trump, saying she "dishes out blame and she accepts responsibility".

"I thought Trump was behaving in a deplorable manner", she said, defending her widely criticized campaign statement. "It really was a flawless storm". Trump, she acknowledged, was an expert at tapping into the anger and frustration that pulsed through the American electorate in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2007 and 2008.

Clinton said President Donald Trump's inauguration speech "was a cry from the white nationalist gut", and said he successfully referenced "a nostalgia that would give hope, comfort, settle grievances, for millions of people who were upset about gains that were made by others".

Clinton, often described as a cold calculator, has also recognized the awful void she felt after her surprise defeat, and this despite a wide lead in the popular vote.

"A lot of people don't want to hear about my plans". "But I think all of them who can be should be reunited with their families". Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Clinton's primary opponent, and former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey for significantly hindering her presidential bid.

She feels that her biggest mistake was to use a personal server for his email while she was Secretary of State.

Clinton also recalled her head-spinning distress on election night and the following morning, when giving her concession speech felt like "an out-of-body experience", she said. She felt "directionless and sad". "But then, midnight, I decided, 'well - you know, looks like it's not going to work'".

"It was a transition very hard", she confesses. Am I the person that people can trust in the end to make hard decisions?' Or do I wheel around and say, 'Get outta my space.
