Houston Texans Star JJ Watt Raising Millions For Harvey Relief

Houston Texans Star JJ Watt Raising Millions For Harvey Relief

He passed the $13 million mark on Thursday night before hitting $15 million on Friday and passing $17 million on Saturday. It was started with an initially modest goal of $200,000. "Just please keep donating, keep raising awareness, keep helping each other out".

The goal was raised to $10 million after donations surpassed the $6 million mark Wednesday, August 30th. The team announced on Twitter on Monday they donated $1 million to the United Way of Greater Houston Flood Relief Fund. "I can't say thank you enough to the Titans organization and everyone over there". Every little thing helps.

"We know that once this storm stops there's going to be massive, massive recovery efforts".

NRG Stadium will host the Texans' first game of the regular season at 1 p.m. on September 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Houston.

"We're using the money to purchase water, generators, clothing, cleaning supplies, things like that", Watt said. And for us to kind of pull together and continue to work the way we've been working, and going out and getting stuff done as a team and preparing the way we've been preparing, even with all the stuff going on in Houston, guys have been able to lock in once they kind of get into the locker room and stuff like that.

"When it became available to us, we've got so many guys on the team that are distracted by all the events and the circumstances that it became increasingly more hard from our perspective to go out and try to play a football game", Smith said.

The Texans flew to the Dallas area and practiced the past two days at Cowboys headquarters. The Giants are one of the latest to join that list with an announcement during Thursday night's game that they are donating $1 million to be split among Americares, the Red Cross and the Houston Food Bank. The team feels it is imperative to get back home to help the Houston community recover from devastation of Hurricane Harvey. The total includes a $100,000 donation from Watt and $50,000 from Rockets point guard Chris Paul. All proceeds from the game - ticket revenue, parking and concessions - were set to go toward Harvey relief.

Astros owner Jim Crane and the team's foundation have pledged $4 million. The McNair family, which owns the Texans, will donate an amount equal to the amount that would have been made from ticket sales.
